Tonight, the Meridian Township Board of Trustees took a huge step forward for equality and fairness. The Board unanimously voted to amend their internal policy manuals to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. They then went a step further by unanimously resolving to amend their human relations ordinance to prohibit housing and public accommodations discrimination.
Trustee Angela Wilson, who has spearheaded these efforts, had the honor of reading the resolution to amend the human relations ordinance. Shortly thereafter, at least three of the Board members shouted over each other to voice their support.
The ordinance will likely be enacted in August. The Board also plans to draft language that will address discrimination in employment. That ordinance is expected to be introduced in September and passed shortly thereafter. The Board has been overwhelmingly supportive of these changes.
The One Capital Region team would also like to thank the Township staff for all of their hard work on this issue. During the June 18th meeting, the Township Manager Frank Walsh said that the Board would be able to act on this issue within a month and he kept his word. Kudos to the Mr. Walsh and the rest of the Township staff.
Please join us in congratulating Meridian Township for taking this vital step toward equality. Thank you, Meridian Township, keep up the good work!
