On Thursday, November 7, the Meridian Township Board of Trustees voted 5-1 to adopt a proposed Human Relations Ordinance that prohibits housing, public accommodations, and employment discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity/expression. Trustee Angela Wilson spearheaded the efforts to pass this important legislation and was part of the press conference in May announcing One Capital Region’s plans to pass nondiscrimination ordinances throughout the Greater Lansing area.
Trustee Wilson introduced the ordinance and has advocated strongly for its passage since day one and read the ordinance into the record prior to the vote. Trustee John Veenstra, another strong supporter for the ordinance supported Trustee Wilson’s motion to adopt. Prior to the vote, Trustee Wilson commented, “This is a very proud moment for Meridian Township to be able to offer protections to all of our residents…I’m very proud of the work that we’ve done here tonight.”
We couldn’t agree more, Trustee Wilson. Kudos go to you and the rest of the Meridian Township Board for all of your hard work on this ordinance.
